Wrong Song, Mr DJ

Many of us use music as an outlet for our deepest feelings. There is always a song for any mood! Happily in love, badly hurt in break-up, grieving, releasing tension etc. However how many songs were dedicated just based on the title or a sample of the song? Be warned, better start learning the whole songs instead of being ended up red faced as the songs could be misinterpreted.

Here are some classic samples :

1. “Born in the U.S.A.” Bruce Springsteen
Thought the Boss was very patriotic. I would shout along with him “I was born in the U.S.A.” (Seriously - I was born in KL!) and did not bother to checkout the rest of the lyrics. Surprise, it is not a patriotic proclamation. It is about veterans returning from the Vietnam War and facing the harsh realities of how they are treated post-war.

2. “Losing My Religion” R.E.M.
Literally, thought Stipe was renouncing his faith. To “lose one’s religion” is a Southern phrase that means to run out of patience or frustrated by a person or situation. This song is about having a crush on somebody and constantly looking for assurances that the love is not unrequited.

3. “Every Breath You Take” The Police
A classic that took our breath away. Is it a love song? “Every game you play, every night you stay, I’ll be watching you,” creepy huh! It is a definite stalker anthem that Sting the romance out!

4. “Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds” The Beatles
Made in Liverpool. Many assume that this song refers to drug use. However, John Lennon stated that he liked these words that were depicted on his son drawing. (Son was drawing a friend named Lucy!) The title is not meant to refer to an LSD trip.

5. “The One I Love” R.E.M.
Another Stipe’s rapid eyes movement! “This one goes out to the one I love.” So far so good until the line about the one he loves being “a simple prop to occupy my time.” Ouch! A Romeo or a jerk?

6. “Crash into Me” Dave Matthews Band
A beautiful love song or a peeping tom anthem? Listen to these lines “Oh I watch you there through the window and I stare at you. You wear nothing but you wear it so well.”

Posting was inspired by an article by Vicki Santillano. In fact the song facts were by her!

BFM 89.9

There is a new radio station in town. BFM 89.9 The Business Station. Those driving around Klang Valley with their eyes wide open would have seen advertisements at the back of taxis. The infamous all day long jam along Jalan Tun Razak, with no other pretty rear sights in sight except the rear of a taxi, was the 'perfect' setting for my love at first sight with 89.9. Mama Mia!

Following are excerpts from the website www.bfm.com.my - "BFM is a 24 hour radio station focused on business news and topics. Think of CNBC or The Edge but on radio. Core programmes include latest business news and stock market reports from Malaysia and other financial centres as well as interviews with business personalities, financial analysts, entrepreneurs, technologists and marketers. BFM also offers business education programmes spanning areas like marketing, finance, technology and business productivity to raise the business proficiency of the Malaysian public".

So far so good - tuned in to some of the interviews and did learn a thing or two. Love the regular market snapshots too. The 80s music and forgotten rock anthems were bonus! "Bonus Funky Music!"

"BFM targets business executives, finance professionals and the investing public. There is no specific age target as the business audience spans all adult age groups. It is their interest in business that defines the listenership, not their age.

Nevertheless, BFM is likely to appeal most to a mature audience. In this respect, those between 35 to 55 of age will be able to identify most with BFM".

Yeah, I definitely fall into this category! Trying to age gracefully! "Botox for Me!"

There is also the fun and creative part in branding BFM. They are constantly forming words with letters BFM. There are business spin like "Bankers Flee Mortgages", political spin - "Barack Foils McCain" etc.

"Brooms For Ministers"
"Bond Fund Manager"
"Banknotes Fixated Missus"
"Bloody Famous Macha"!

* And The Winner Is ...

Spend above RM30 and win a car! Buy 2 items and stand a chance to travel to Timbuktu. Everyday we are bombarded by advertisements to tempt us to spend. As a sweetener, the retailers are offering contests whole year round to increase their sales. It is a proven marketing ploy that plays tricks on consumers. The more we buy the more chances to win the cars, electrical items, holidays etc.

Hmm, we did hear stories that some of these retailers were not 'honest'. There was no winner at the end or a model or two will be employed to be photographed as winner. Any real story to share?

Picked this interesting story published in the UK tabloids last week. The BBC has been fined £400,000 for “deliberately” cheating the public with fake phone-in competitions. Telly watchdog Ofcom blasted BBC for “faking winners of competitions and deliberately conducting competitions unfairly”. A probe revealed that the shows had made up names for phone-in competitions or pre-recorded them with fake “winners”.

Another broadcaster, ITV has been hit with a record fine of £5.68m for abusing premium rate phone services in a host of hit shows. Popular shows were found to have “serious editorial issues” and have all been penalised for misleading viewers. The production team of Soapstar Superstar ignored the viewers' vote and finalised results before the lines had closed. ITV made £7.8m from uncounted votes from these programmes in question and some 10 million telephone calls were affected.

So still have the urge to attach the counterfoil and submit the contest form? Or sms to vote your favourite reality stars?

Kiss My #^%

Latest huh-hah is on the showing of boxer shorts incident by the singer of Carburetor Dung in Sunday Protes rally. Big deal? You decide based on the photo.

I had the chance to attend one of the underground music gig at The Piccadilly during the early 90s which featured Carburetor Dung, Butterfingers, OAG and many others. Fuel, roti canai and nasi lemak were much cheaper then. So no baring of any flesh but just purely baring of music creativity. Great fun and no untoward incident.

According to the band, it's part of their act to bare their #^% (with the boxer shorts on la!) when they performed Mari Menyanyi Menjilat for the past 5 years. As the song condemned the rampant corruption, it was an act to signal ' kiss my #^%'.

Someone advisers could perhaps get them to do a statutory declaration claiming wardrobe malfuncion? Duress at Protes!

1 title that they were interested but could not salvage any contents was Robin Hood.

Even soundtracks have been identified. In the opening scene, Shaggy's 'Mr LOVER! Lover! Mr BOMB-astic! will be played! Other singers that will be featured are Elton John, George Michael Jimmy Somerville and Frankie Goes to Hollywood. Jailhouse Rock! will be played during the closing credit.

Welcome to the Jungle - Headlines

'Appetite for Destruction'. This is the funniest of the lot. Even funnier than the comic strip. MIC in a quandary. It quoted that it is rare for leaders in MIC to resign. The usual way to disconnect with the party is through expulsion. I did laugh out loud! The writer who happened to be from the same community, did not sound sarcastic but was just stating the fact. 'Right Next Door to Hell'.

'Use Your Illusion'. This is not funny but puzzling. Dad of 18 to wed 4th wife. Why or why these ladies were happy to share their hubby? This chap is an odd job worker and yet could afford to wed many wives. The wives are the breadwinners. According to a lady colleague, this type of guy possesses 'charm'. By the same measure and formula, that would entitle us for #ahem# number of partners! 'Knockin' on Heaven's Door'.

'The Spaghetti Incident'. This is sad but true. Of all places, it happened in France. Soldiers used live bullets instead of blanks in drill and injured 17 in the watching crowd. Ouch! Taking a cue from their past their prime aka aging footballers. Couldn't shoot straight. Or maybe just wanna get rid of the old stocks in order to buy new bullets. 'Don't Cry'.

Lah Lah Lah Lah Lah Lah Lah Lah

I just can't get you out of my head! Yes Kylie and Pak Lah. You're always on my mind!

Even though it's the football fever - Goal Goal Goal Ole Ole Ole.. Go Go Go O lah O lah O lah.

I ain't no politician and I have nothing personal against you but the recent happenings do affect us. The investors are staying away. As a small time punter, I do not like to see my investment going downhill. As a rakyat of a natural resources rich nation, I do not like the way it is being managed.

I have no ambition to the PM and don't care who is the next PM - whether it's N, A or K. Everyone just wanted the change! Everyone wanted stability. As a leader, we know we should not overstay especially when the writing is on the wall. Perhaps a new leader will rejuvenate the machinery and bring new hope. Just like in a football match, substitution is done to bring in fresh legs in order to win the match.

You do have your good moments but like it or not, the bad moments overwhelmed the good moments. Too many warlords in your regime who caused your downfall.

Lah Lah Lah Lah
Lah Lah Lah Lah
Yeah Yeah Yeah
Good Bye!
